Goal Setting

Bethesda, Family Martial Arts, Goal Setting, Quick Thoughts, Youth Martial Arts
Are you a quitter? There's a difference between prioritizing and putting it off; a difference between changing goals and quitting. Our instructor meeting this past week gave us some valuable insight. As a new student, a new parent, a new martial artist, sometimes we are overwhelmed by the "newness" of a goal we are setting. Sometimes we pick the wrong goals. But- all of this is a part of the process. There's no perfection in life, just a whittling away at excess until you find your right path. Our instructors agree that martial arts is how they learned to stick to a goal- sometimes goals they later learned they wouldn't do again, sometimes goals that taught them about something they now hold near and dear. The only time one of…

Goal Setting

Bethesda, Family Martial Arts, Goal Setting, Perseverance
As we close in on the end of January, it’s time to reevaluate our goals. Martial arts shows a great parallel to goal setting, and students in our programs can use the secret formula to success to apply to their own goals at home. 1. New Years Goal Setting Tips

Bethesda, Goal Setting, Holiday, Perseverance, Quick Thoughts
One of the biggest travesties of the New Year season are all of the dropped goals! This year, make yourself successful by: Know what you want: this includes why, what, where and with who you will accomplish your goal. Think about ways to keep it fun- if you're trying to get back in shape, look for fun classes. If you're trying to make more money, look into making a hobby profitable. Have a plan: write down specific action steps you will take! Take consistent action: Don't overload in the first few days, take small, consistent steps over time. Have a success coach: a partner in your goal, an instructor, or a group at your local martial arts academy can help. Review your progress: look back on what you've done in…

Persistence: A Lesson from Dr. Suess

Goal Setting, Perseverance, Quick Thoughts
[caption id="attachment_108" align="alignleft" width="318"] Sam I Am- Dr. Suess' Most Persistent Character[/caption] Have you ever met someone that the first time something difficult occurs, they give up? That person would never be able to make it mountain climbing- if they ran in to a rock, they would stop. They'd also never make it as an olympic swimmer- when they ran into the wall, they wouldn't turn around! They would most CERTAINLY never make it to Black Belt, because the first time they had trouble, they would give up. A simple children's book gives us a great lesson during our testing. Each colored belt on the way to Black Belt is simply a small step, a small obstacle towards the end goal. They can be conquered with positive thinking and preparation,…
